Introduction

The Coyane Saikaitoki Restaurant, designed by DO.DO., is situated in Hasami, Nagasaki, Japan, renowned for its pottery production. This project for porcelain manufacturer Saikai Toki is adjacent to the ÔYANE multi-purpose space, also designed by DO.DO. and opened in 2016.

Creating a Relaxing Space

The restaurant was conceived to enhance visitors’ relaxation, echoing the design philosophy of ÔYANE. Utilizing “whiter-than-white” Hasami-Ware tiles, originally used in a tunnel’s inner walls for enhanced visibility, the building’s main material exudes a serene ambiance.

Incorporating Derelict Tiles

Derelict yet beautiful, the Hasami-Ware tiles were repurposed for both exterior and interior surfaces, including furniture. The design integrates the restaurant seamlessly with ÔYANE alfresco, with six sliding glass doors facilitating a fluid connection between the spaces. Slidable windows on the north side invite a refreshing breeze, allowing patrons to enjoy the idyllic landscape.

Harmonious Design Elements

Tables, chairs, and stacking trays were meticulously designed to harmonize with the restaurant’s atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from existing places and materials, the design seamlessly blends all elements, extending and connecting them naturally as if conceived from the outset.

Conclusion

The Coyane Saikaitoki Restaurant serves as a testament to the revitalization of tradition, embracing the heritage of Hasami’s pottery production while offering a contemporary dining experience. Through thoughtful design and integration of local materials, DO.DO. has created a space where patrons can immerse themselves in both culinary delights and cultural heritage.
