Architectural Vision

Gonzalez Haase Architects envisioned Aera Bakery’s second Berlin branch as a captivating space impossible to ignore. Located at Rosenthaler Platz, the bakery and café, known for its gluten-free offerings, demanded an architectural intervention that would celebrate its prominent position. The architects aimed to showcase the store’s interior through a commanding storefront window, emphasizing its striking Lapis Lazuli blue palette.

Spatial Liberation

By stripping away layers of the past, the architects revealed the space’s true potential. With a ceiling height of 3.8 meters and an unobstructed 13-meter-long wall, the 70m2 area was transformed into an expansive canvas. A diagonal concrete counter, seamlessly integrated into the room, divides the space into functional zones, guiding visitors from entry to order placement.

Monochromatic Majesty

The interior exudes a monochromatic allure, with intense Lapis Lazuli blue enveloping every surface. Concrete, applied in uniform strips, blurs the boundaries between floor, wall, and counter, creating a cohesive spatial sculpture. Designed by Gonzalez Haase Architects, solid oak furniture and stainless steel shelving add to the room’s understated elegance.

Inspired by Artistry

The color scheme draws inspiration from 17th-century paintings, particularly the works of Jan Vermeer. Like Vermeer’s meticulous portrayal of light and shadow, the space undergoes a dramatic transformation throughout the day. The architects deliberately chose Lapis Lazuli blue for its rich hue and historical significance, echoing the painter’s preference for natural ultramarine pigment.

Illuminating Design

LED lighting strips, combined with natural light filtering through the storefront, accentuate the bakery’s warm-golden baked goods against the backdrop of deep blue. The deliberate juxtaposition of colors and materials creates a visually dynamic and harmonious environment, inviting patrons to immerse themselves in a sensory experience.
