Adani Power has initiated a groundbreaking pilot project at its Mundra plant, focusing on the combustion of green ammonia as part of its commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Utilizing Green Ammonia for Combustion
In a bid to reduce carbon emissions, the Mundra plant, a significant private sector power facility, will incorporate up to 20 per cent green ammonia in the boiler of a conventional coal-fired 330 MW unit. Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen produced through renewable energy-powered electrolysis, serves as a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels due to its lack of carbon content.
Collaborative Efforts for Sustainability
Adani Power has partnered with IHI and Kowa, prominent companies with expertise in energy solutions, to execute the pilot project. IHI specializes in ammonia firing technology, while Kowa is renowned for its energy-saving products. The project involves combustion tests conducted at IHI’s facility in Japan, simulating conditions at the Mundra Power Station.
Future Prospects and Expansion
Upon achieving economic viability, the partners envision the widespread implementation of green ammonia combustion at the Mundra Power Station. This initiative marks the first instance outside of Japan where such advanced green technology is being deployed.
Adani Total Gas’ Green Hydrogen Pilot Project
In a parallel endeavor, Adani Total Gas, a leading energy and city gas distribution company, is embarking on a ‘Green Hydrogen Production and Blending Pilot Project’ in collaboration with TotalEnergies.
Blending Green Hydrogen with Natural Gas
The project aims to blend green hydrogen (GH2), produced through renewable energy-driven electrolysis, with natural gas for residential and commercial consumers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This blending process reduces carbon intensity while maintaining the heating capabilities of natural gas.
Path to Decarbonization
Scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2024-25, the pilot project will gradually increase the percentage of green hydrogen in the blend, subject to regulatory approvals. Upon successful completion, the hydrogen-blended fuel will be progressively introduced to larger sections of the city and other designated areas.
Aligning with National and Global Objectives
These initiatives align with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and its broader commitment to sustainability. They contribute to the country’s ambitious goals of decarbonizing key sectors and transitioning towards renewable energy sources, as outlined in its “Panchamrit” pledge at COP26.
In summary, Adani Power and Adani Total Gas’ pilot projects signify a proactive approach towards sustainability and innovation. By embracing green technologies and forging strategic partnerships, the Adani Group continues to play a pivotal role in India’s journey towards a greener, more sustainable future.
