Nestled within a residential enclave in the northeast of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, the Grandes Terres primary school undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis with the recreation center and school extension project envisioned by Hesters Oyon architects.

Reinventing the Urban Landscape

Central to the project is the revitalization of the school’s facade and the addition of a recreation center. Along the main facade, a tree-lined axis redefines school entrances, infusing the site with a sense of urbanity and charm.

Seamless Connectivity and Spatial Autonomy

A hallmark of the design is the integration of fully glazed circulation spaces, facilitating seamless movement between the school and recreation center while traversing landscaped patios. This spatial organization ensures functional autonomy between different school components, minimizing disruptions during construction.

Sustainable Construction Practices

Embracing sustainability, the project employs a wooden structure, utilizing biobased materials in various forms such as timber roofs, wood frame walls, larch cladding, and interior spruce woodwork. Careful attention to envelope watertightness enhances energy efficiency, further underscoring the project’s eco-friendly ethos.

Architectural Elegance and Innovation

The iconic origami roof, adorned with zinc coating, serves as a striking architectural feature, seemingly floating above the site. Its oblique lines impart a sense of fluidity and elegance, softening the atmosphere and enhancing the overall ambiance.

Holistic Interior Experience

Internally, the spaces are bathed in natural light and intricately connected with surrounding gardens. Wood accents evoke warmth and comfort, particularly in areas dedicated to children, fostering a nurturing environment. The seamless integration between interior and exterior spaces enhances the building’s harmony with its landscape surroundings.

Through thoughtful design and sustainable construction practices, the recreation center and extension of Grandes Terres primary school epitomize a harmonious blend of urbanity and nature. This transformative project not only redefines the school’s physical presence but also underscores the importance of environmental stewardship in contemporary architecture.
