Nestled northwest of La Garriga, adjacent to the scenic Congost river, the Can Luna industrial complex stands as a pivotal site for the urban development of the municipality. The city council envisions transforming this historic complex, comprising three expansive warehouses, into a vibrant socio-cultural hub. While the project unfolds in phases, the initial phase has already revitalized the central nave, paving the way for a versatile multi-purpose space.
Restoring Urban Fabric
Central to the project is the restoration of the complex’s original character, starting with the central courtyard. By clearing the courtyard and removing adjacent structures, the space regains its urban prominence, serving as a communal nexus for accessing the warehouses. This rejuvenation of the courtyard enhances the complex’s connectivity and creates a welcoming entry point for visitors.
Innovative Design Solutions
A key design intervention is the construction of a new access gallery, serving as a circulation hub and environmental regulator. This gallery, designed to adapt to changing seasons, controls light and temperature, ensuring a comfortable indoor environment year-round. Its phased construction aligns with the project’s incremental approach, allowing flexibility in implementation while prioritizing functionality.
Preserving Architectural Heritage
The rehabilitation of Hall B focuses on preserving its architectural integrity while accommodating modern needs. The iconic ceramic roof and wooden trusses are meticulously reinforced to retain their structural integrity. Demolishing window sills creates larger openings, flooding the interior with natural light and facilitating seamless access. Meanwhile, restored facade windows offer captivating views, fostering a visual connection between the interior and the surrounding landscape.
Fostering Connectivity
Through thoughtful interventions, the project achieves visual permeability, seamlessly integrating the Can Luna courtyard, access gallery, interior spaces, and the lush surroundings of the Congost river. This interconnectedness creates a dynamic environment that encourages exploration and community engagement, breathing new life into the historic industrial complex.
In the Rehabilitation of Can Luna Industrial Complex, Nil Brullet Arquitectura and Maria Morillo Sedó have not only preserved architectural heritage but also reimagined it as a vibrant cultural destination. As the project continues to unfold, it promises to enrich the fabric of La Garriga, celebrating its past while embracing its future.
