Casa Batlló stands as a testament to the captivating essence of Mediterranean light, embodying its interplay of light, shadow, and the vibrant hues of the sky and sea. At the heart of the house lies a central courtyard, meticulously designed to capture and distribute this Mediterranean light vertically throughout the space, ensuring every corner is bathed in its luminous glow.

Abstract Expression of Light

In our endeavor to celebrate the genius use of light within Casa Batlló, we embarked on a project that aimed to abstractly convey its essence. Our goal was to enable every visitor to appreciate the profound qualities of light, independent of the house’s intricate shapes, exquisite craftsmanship, and historical significance.

Establishing Dialogue through Design

One of the most challenging tasks was envisioning the interior of an existing emergency stair, a space traversed by every visitor to Casa Batlló. By conceptualizing the vertical development of the stair in relation to the central patio, we found an opportunity to establish a dialogue between them. Our design for the stair space reflects and engages with the essence of Casa Batlló’s patio.

Capturing Light through Materiality

Conveying the essence of light within an enclosed space posed a unique challenge. We envisioned adorning this space with aluminum chain curtains, meticulously crafted to capture and manipulate light like fishing nets. Through the interplay of light and shadow on these curtains, we sought to evoke the essence of light itself, without the distraction of other materials.

A Narrative of Light

The aluminum curtains are arranged in varying shades, transitioning from brighter tones on the rooftop to deeper hues resembling shadows in the basement. This gradient of light mirrors the transition from sky to ground, from light to shadow, weaving a narrative that unfolds seamlessly from top to bottom, akin to a new grammar inherent to Casa Batlló.

A Tribute to Gaudi’s Legacy

If Gaudi’s vision for Casa Batlló was a homage to Mediterranean light, our project serves as a tribute to his profound understanding and innovative use of light within the iconic space. Through our abstract expression of light, we aim to honor and perpetuate the legacy of Casa Batlló’s timeless illumination.
