Facebook-owned messaging giant WhatsApp is reportedly testing an increase in the file size limit on its platform from 100MB to 2GB, as it strives to enhance its feature set and compete with rivals like Telegram.
Expanded File Size Limit
According to a report by WhatsApp tracker WABetaInfo, the messaging service is currently conducting a limited test in Argentina. Select users on the latest beta version of the app can share files up to 2GB in size. This functionality is available for both Android and iOS users, although the test is restricted to specific users, making it challenging to ascertain the exact qualifying criteria.
While the timeline for the broader rollout remains uncertain, WhatsApp’s track record suggests that the expansion to other regions could occur in the coming weeks. If implemented, this adjustment would mark the second instance of WhatsApp increasing its file size limit. Previously, the limit stood at 16MB before being raised to 100MB. Notably, the file size limits differ by platform, with Android allowing 100MB and iOS permitting 128MB.
Competition with Telegram
The move to increase the file size limit to 2GB is seen as a direct response to Telegram, which has long permitted users to share large files up to 2GB in size.
Upcoming WhatsApp Features
WhatsApp is actively testing and trialing several new features to bolster its offerings. Among these upcoming features are:
Group Polls
Group polls, a feature already available on Telegram, may soon be introduced to WhatsApp. Reports suggest that this feature has been spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS. It would enable group members to create polls, with answers being end-to-end encrypted.
Message Reactions
Similar to the reaction feature on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp is working on allowing users to react to messages with emojis. This feature will support up to six emojis and will be available in both group chats and individual conversations.
Hide ‘Last Seen’ from Specific Contacts
Currently, WhatsApp users can only choose to hide their ‘last seen’ status from all contacts or display it to everyone. However, a forthcoming update may enable users to hide their ‘last seen’ status selectively, allowing them to control who can see their activity on the platform.
No Time Limit for Message Deletion
Presently, users can only delete sent messages within a time limit of approximately 68 minutes. However, WhatsApp is considering removing this time limit, allowing users to delete messages at any time without restrictions.
